Justice is Served
DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA — The 76-year-old Florida woman who was smashed in the face by a brutal punch from a complete stranger is thrilled her attacker has been locked up.
Douglas Wingo was arrested Saturday for the alleged assault on Janet Palm last Wednesday. The vicious attack in broad daylight on a Daytona Beach street left Palm with a broken nose, a cracked skull and internal bleeding.
“I think it’s fantastic because he needs help,” Palm told reporters of the arrest.
Surveillance video captured the moment when Wingo confronted Palm as she was walking along the sidewalk on her way to develop some photos and asked, “Where’s the f--cking police? Where’s the f--cking police?”
When Palm said, “I don’t see any police,” Wingo punched her square in the face, she said.
Wingo walked off after the attack, while several people completely ignored Palm, who was laid out on the ground, before someone finally called for help, Daytona Police Chief Mike Chitwood said.
"Not only do you have this scumbag out there that just sucker punches this woman, but you have the apathy of people who were driving by or walking by that kind of like just let it roll off their back," he said.
Palm was treated at the hospital for her injuries. Tipsters who saw the surveillance video led authorities to Wingo on Saturday.
Wingo has been charged with aggravated assault. Palm is still bruised up, but she says she is well on her way to recovery.
