A Missouri City, Texas police officer was forced to leap off a bridge to avoid being crushed by his own squad car when a vehicle driven by a drunk elementary school teacher crashed into it Friday night.

Officer Kenneth Lewis was handling a routine traffic stop along Texas State Highway 6 near Knights Court just after midnight, when Christie Diane Biggers drove her vehicle into his squad car, which was parked alongside the road.

The officer can be seen on police dash cam footage jumping over the side of the overpass to avoid being crushed.

Lewis fell 30 feet and landed on the rocky ground. He suffered a broken pelvis and a ruptured aorta that required surgery. He was a rookie cop with only three months of experience.

Biggers, a 46-year-old gym teacher at Scanlan Oaks Elementary School, was found to have been driving drunk at the time and is charged with intoxication assault.
