Armed elderly couple stops burglar, who is then released to strike again

A 70-year-old man and his 66-year-old wife, armed with a shotgun and handgun, wouldn't allow themselves to become victims to burglar Aaron Lujan. However, there wasn't much they could do about authorities releasing Lujan, who went on to carjack another senior citizen less than a day later.

NSFW    ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO — An elderly man and his wife, armed with a shotgun and handgun, stopped a burglar from robbing their house. But the suspect, 26-year-old Aaron Lujan, was promptly released on bond, only to carjack another senior at gunpoint less than a day later.

Lujan was released on bond for a drug charge on November 18. Just two days later, he robbed the garage of a 70-year-old man and his 66-year-old wife. The elderly couple caught Lujan in the act as he was loading their generator and some tools into a stolen SUV. He also tried to take their car keys.

Lujan ignored the couple's requests to stop, so they took matters into their own hands, arming themselves with a shotgun and handgun from their house and holding Lujan at gunpoint until the police arrived.

Lujan didn't spend much time in jail, and was released on bond later that same day. Roughly 24 hours later, he was again up to no good, robbing an old woman of her car keys at gunpoint. The next day, Lujan offered to meet the woman in a Target parking lot to return the keys, but she wisely decided to call the police instead. This was a smart move on her part; Lujan admitted to police he had planned to follow her home so he could rob her house, too.

When police showed up at the Target parking lot, Lujan, with an accomplice this time, got spooked and took off in a stolen car. Police later found him sitting in a tree, hiding.

According to KOAT ABC7, Lujan was released on bond following the garage burglary because his rap sheet carries just a few misdemeanor crimes. Now with a violent felony arrest on his record, the revolving jail door is likely to come to a stop.
