CHICAGO — The Chicago Police Department has publicly released video footage showing the killing of a black teenager by a police officer.
The video shows the final moments of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald's life on October 20, 2014 when he is confronted by two armed police officers in the middle of a Chicago street. The teenager is seen walking down the center of the street with what appears to be a knife. Two officers point handguns at him, and when he turns toward one of the officers he is shot, the impact of the first bullet causing him to spin around before he collapses on the street. The officers, now out of frame, continue to shoot him multiple times.
An autopsy report from the Cook County medical examiner's office showed that McDonald was shot 16 times in total.
The video was released on the same day that a white Chicago police officer, Jason Van Dyke, was charged with murder for the teenager's death.
