UNITED KINGDOM — The Border Force detector dogs in the UK are celebrating 40 years of sniffing out medication, drugs among other things to protect UK borders.

According to Border Force - Gov.UK, different breeds such as Labradors, German Brief Haired, Pudelpointers, Slovak Pointers and more are usually trained to work as detector dogs.

Over the years, around 700 different detector canines have been trained by Border Force officers.

According to reports, it takes around three to ten months to coach a detector canine.

A canine's ability to smell is up to 10,000 times more acute than a person's, reports PBS.

Detective canines have discovered items such as half a billion pounds in cash money, 900 million cigarettes, and 450 tons of tobacco.

The dogs are even able to sniff out fake passports due to the difference in the kind of ink used to make them, as well as differentiate between various currencies of money.

UK Immigration Minister Caroline Nokes says detective canines have "an unbelievable sense of scent, workability and loyalty [which] make them a useful asset.."
