Twitter Jacks up! Time-tested 140-character limit gets doubled
So far, it's totally led to more creative intellectual expression and informed political debate.
SAN FRANCISCO — Social media platform Twitter has doubled the character limit users can send in tweets.
Originally designed to be no longer than a text, the 140-character tweet has been the norm since Twitter began in 2006. From now on, all Twitter users, prolific Twits included, have 280 characters to play with.
According to CNN, Twitter made the decision after 5 percent of users in a 280-character test group wrote beyond 140 characters. Two percent made it past 190-characters.
