A New Mexico couple is recovering after the pair’s three-year-old son accidentally shot them with a handgun Saturday.
Monique Villescas and Justin Reynolds of Albuquerque, New Mexico, were in a motel room at America’s Best Value Inn with their two children, a three-year-old boy and a two-year-old girl, when the shooting occurred.
On Saturday afternoon, the young boy reached into his mother’s purse to retrieve an iPod. He pulled out a 9mm handgun instead and accidentally fired the weapon.
“All of the sudden we heard the gun go off,” Reynolds said in an interview with KOB 4. “The next minute I realized my girlfriend was bleeding.”
The bullet struck Reynolds in the buttock, exited through his hip and struck Villescas -- who is eight months’ pregnant -- in the arm. The two-year-old was unharmed.
Reynolds reportedly tried to slow Villescas’ bleeding while he called an ambulance. He has since been released from the hospital, and KOB 4 reports Villescas is in stable condition.
Officer Simon Drobik of the Albuquerque Police Department said in a press release: “The Albuquerque Police Department cannot emphasize enough that if you choose to be a gun owner ALWAYS secure and lock up your firearm out of the reach of children and adolescents.”
Police also said the parents could face felony criminal negligence charges.
