Texas teacher facing lesser charge after getting pregnant from affair with 13-year-old
A Houston area middle school teacher pleaded guilty to a lesser sexual assault charge after originally being charged with continuous sexual abuse of a child.
HOUSTON — A middle school teacher who was in a relationship with her student pleaded guilty in court — though if she plays her cards right, she might get off easy.
KPRC reports that Alexandria Vera was originally charged with continuous sexual abuse of a child, which could’ve gotten her life in prison. Instead, the 24-year old pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child.
If convicted, the former teacher at Stovall Middle School in Houston will be getting a maximum of 30 years in jail. Her lawyer, however, will ask for deferred adjudication probation, reports CBS. She could even come away without a conviction on her record if the probation is completed without incident.
Vera was romantically involved with a 13-year-old student from September 2015 to January 2016. The two had supposedly been in a loving, relationship that was approved by the boy’s parents.
She got pregnant in early 2016, but aborted the baby after being questioned by Child Protective Services in February.
Vera is currently out on bail, but isn’t allowed to go online, contact the student, or be near any schools. She is also on house arrest from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and has to have her location tracked by GPS.
According to court documents, Alexandria Vera claimed she was having near-daily sex with her student when they were together. MONTGOMERY COUNTY JAIL
