HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT — Rapper 50 Cent, real name Curtis Jackson, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy the same day he was due in court in New York for a $5 million settlement that was awarded to Lastonia Leviston, the mother of rival rapper Rick Ross' child.
Jackson was ordered by the jury to pay Leviston the settlement for posting a sex tape of her on his website. The 13-minute sex tape released online in 2009 also featured commentary by Jackson, who was dressed up as his alter ego Pimpin' Curly. Ross and Leviston broke up in 2004, four years before the sex tape was made. The video has since been taken down, but it was part of a feud between 50 Cent and Rick Ross.
The Wall Street Journal quoted court papers from the 2010 lawsuit saying: "Rap wars or beefs are common in the rap and hip hop culture and involve irritating other artists to create more interest, develop more awareness for themselves and create competition, or battles, as to two can create material 'up to standard' quickly."
Filing for bankruptcy usually puts a halt to lawsuits and collection efforts, which means Leviston won't be able to collect the $5 million from Jackson for some time. According to the May issue of Forbes Magazine, Jackson is worth an estimated $155 million.
