A train loaded with 72 cars of crude oil derailed in the early hours of the morning, slamming into Quebec township Lac-Megantic where fires and explosions from the tanker cars incinerated the downtown area.
Five people are confirmed dead and at least 40 unaccounted for as firefighters continued to battle blazes from the tanker cars more than 24 hours after the derailment.
More than 30 buildings were incinerated in the downtown area when five of the tankers exploded, sending huge fireballs into the sky.
Rescue crews have not yet been able to reach the worst affected areas as they struggle to stabilise the temperatures of the tanker cars to avoid further explosions.
