A military helicopter carrying nine soldiers in Nicaragua crashed into a lake west of the capital of Managua. The Russian-made Mi-17 helicopter crashed while returning from a mission in the northwest of the country. The cause was not immediately clear, Army officials told Reuters. Soldiers are searching the area. Only one body has been recovered thus far as the location where the crash occurred is difficult to access.
An army spokesman said the helicopter was routinely used for training troops. All of the nine men on board were in training and were returning from a training mission when the accident happened. The aircraft plunged into a lake 35 miles west of Managua as it was returning to a military base in the town of La Paz Centro.
