Houston teen's gun selfie attempt ends with accidental, fatal shot to the head

The devastated family of 19-year-old Houston, Texas resident Deleon Alonso Smith said that he was a fun-loving man who was about to start community college this week.

HOUSTON — A 19-year-old man from Houston, Texas accidentally killed himself while taking selfies with a loaded gun.

Deleon Alonso Smith and an unidentified cousin reportedly posed with a gun they found on Tuesday inside their apartment. Police have not determined where the gun came from, and they believe Smith was unaware that the gun was loaded.

After taking a few selfies, the cousin left the room to take a short break. When Smith pointed the gun to his throat and took a selfie, he accidentally pulled the trigger. Startled by the sound of the gunshot, the cousin ran back to check on Smith, but it was too late to save him.

Smith's family was devastated. They said he was a fun-loving man who was about to start college this week. The 19-year-old is survived by his two daughters.
