Darnell Taylor is being hailed as a hero after he lept into the Delaware River to rescue three teens and their mom. The mom allegedly drove her vehicle, and kids, into the river deliberately.
The woman, Joann Smith of Florence Township, New Jersey, reportedly suffers from some mental condition, and it’s not known why she apparently attempted to drown herself and her kids.
She is now behind bars, charged with attempted murder and child endangerment.
Rescuer Darnell Taylor and his wife were driving by when they saw the half-submerged van. Taylor had lost his dad to cancer the day before, but this hero still sprang into action without regard to his own safety.
“I couldn't get the window open because the window in the van was not a pop-out window," Taylor told media outlets yesterday. "So I kept telling the young lady to kick the window out and she kicked it out,” he said.
Police say Taylor’s actions likely saved the teens — and their mom — from serious injury or even death.
But Darnell Taylor says he’s no hero. “I’m just a member of this community and anyone else would have done the same thing,” he said humbly.
