What the Foul?
MARBLE FALLS, TEXAS — Two John Jay High School football players were suspended from their team and their school after tackling a referee on purpose during a game against Marble Falls on Friday night.
Two other John Jay players had been ejected earlier in the game. The tackle came when there was about one minute left in the game. According to what NISD Athletic Director Stan Laing told KENS5, after the incident, the referee ejected the player who tackled him, but then wrongly ejected another player from John Jay on accident, while leaving the second player who hit him in the game. Marble Falls ended up winning the game 15-9.
John Jay coach gary Gutierrez apologized for the actions of his players after the game, and an investigation is underway by the Northside Independent School District.
Austin Football Officials Association secretary Wayne Elliott told ESPN: "The first thing we want is that those two kids never play football again."
NISD Athletic Director Stan Laing told KENS 5: "We have to be very careful with what we say until we get the entire story," Laing said. "It's really unfortunate. We're still getting stories on different things. That's why we've got to make sure to get the entire story before we basically share it with everybody, because we don't want anything out there to be assumed. We want to be very clear on exactly what happened.
"We'll just have to go through the whole investigation and let all that come out. We will investigate and take appropriate action on what we need to do, what we need to address." Laing added.
