Linda Maddox, 63, shot her 7-year-old grandson Tyler Maddox on Tuesday after mistaking him for an intruder who had broken into her home in Tampa, Florida.
Maddox was looking after her twin grandsons while their father Reginald Maddox was at work. After putting them to bed, she placed a chair against the bedroom door handle for extra protection.
She heard the chair sliding against the floor at 1 a.m. while the boys were sleeping, and thought an intruder had broken into the house. Maddox grabbed a .22-caliber revolver she keeps next to her bed and fired one shot toward the door. She realized she shot Tyler after hearing him cry out.
When the lights came on, Tyler was laying near the door with a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital and was in critical but stable condition.
Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Cristal Bermudez Nunez said Maddox felt unsafe when her son worked overnight and would sleep with her grandsons in her room and block the door with a chair. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has been called to the house 12 times since 2011, for calls involving suspicious persons and cars.
Linda Maddox was not arrested. No charges have been filed against her.
