Thai riot police with the Region 1 Provincial Police Bureau were conducting a training exercise on Monday around noon. Helicopters brought in reinforcements as part of the simulation.

It’s not yet clear exactly what caused the accident, but as members of the riot control unit rappelled from helicopters, Senior Sergeant Major Monchai Boonpairote fell and landed on the ground.

He suffered serious injuries, including a broken arm, and was rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment.

The accident occurred against the backdrop of the latest months-long unrest between Thailand’s government and the so-called Yellow-shirt protesters fighting to oust Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, who they say is a proxy for her brother, exiled former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
