This man, 70-year-old Phillip Sailors, plead guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter after fatally shooting a man last year.
In late January of last year, 22-year-old Rodrigo Diaz is driving along Hillcrest Drive looking for a friend’s house in suburban Gwinnett County outside Atlanta, Georgia. However his GPS lead him to the wrong home. As Diaz mistakenly waited for a friend to come out of the home, the actual resident, Sailors, felt threatened by the sudden presence of the three strangers in the car parked outside. He ran outside and confronted the men with a gun. Diaz along with his passengers were understandably startled, and tried to leave Sailor’s property. That’s when Sailors opened fire on the car, killing him.
With the plea deal, Sailors’s murder charge was reduced to involuntary manslaughter, avoiding jail time by serving a one year probation and a $500 fine. The Diaz family settled out of court for an undisclosed amount, but wanted the court to know that their son did not commit a crime.
