JACKSONVILLE BEACH, FLORIDA — If you have a bad Star Wars pun that's related to blue cheese, now's the time to break it out. A man dressed as Darth Vader was caught on surveillance footage walking into a Jacksonville Beach, Florida "8 till Late" convenience store on the night of Sunday, November 22, 2015 before pointing a handgun at the employees.
When the armed robber demanded cash, one of the employees defied expectations and simply said, "No." This, evidently, threw the would-be Dark Lord of convenience store robberies off his game a bit, allowing a second employee enough time to grab a jar of blue cheese salad dressing, which he then threw at the robber's face.
The jar landed directly in the center of robber-Darth's mask, prompting the man underneath to rip it off in order to nurse the considerable cut that appeared along his forehead and nose. The robber then fled the scene in a silver car bearing New York license plates, but he was picked up by police later that same evening anyway.
Darth Vader turned out to be 32-year-old Jacob Mercer, a man with a long criminal history and who was found to be in possession of several handguns and ammunition, despite being a convicted felon. Mercer was detained without bail and faces armed robbery and other serious charges.
Experts generally recommend that robbery victims comply with a criminal's instructions, as losing property is obviously less important than losing one's life. In this case, the blue-cheese-jar-throw did the trick, but would you have done the same in that situation?
