A police officer in Chile drawn criticism for shooting a car thief dead in the middle of tightly packed highway traffic after footage from the officer’s helmet-cam recorded the entire event on December 3.
The location and circumstances of the chase aren’t clear; there is little coverage of it in the English-language press. However, Liveleak user ‘dieglhix’, who Claims to be a Chilean I.T. worker and who first put the video online, included this description:
“Helmet-Cam footage from a member of the Chilean police force, as he pursues a stolen vehicle through traffic. On recognizing the vehicle, the officer parks the bike, draws his gun and approaches.
“The seventeen year old thief decides to make a run for it in the stolen vehicle, and the officer gives chase on foot, firing his weapon. The thief is struck, and perished two days later. Seven of his organs were donated to transplant recipients.
“It's worth mentioning that Chile is not a violent country, but we got high access to internet, so we will show you the worst of us on this site. (Less homicides per capita than USA and way better cops to be honest, as cop brutality was mostly thing of the past, especially Pinochet's regime).”
Police officials have defended the officer’s lethal force, saying the young thief had already run down down one person and may have injured or killed others with his reckless behaviour. The officer did not know the age of the thief’s age at the time the shooting.
