Darryl Jouett, a 25-year veteran of the Erlanger, Ohio Police Department, injured himself with a handgun after a dinner date with his wife Friday night.

For some reason, the off-duty officer drew his weapon while in the elevator with his wife. Surveillance video shows Jouet having trouble re-holstering the handgun when the firearm was discharged.

The bullet appears to have entered straight into his belly, sending the officer to the floor. His wife immediately called 911 for help.

But this isn’t the only possibility for what happened. Several media outlets have reported the bullet ricocheted off the elevator wall before striking the officer.

“He was going to carry it in his hand as they walked to the car,” Cincinnati police Captain Michael John told WLWT. “As he was pulling the gun from the holster, a round discharged, ricocheted in the elevator, struck him in the stomach.”

However, it’s more likely that a hollow point bullet would have fragmented upon hitting the steel wall. So Jouet may have been struck by one of the ricocheting fragments.

The officer is recovering from the injury at home.
