Chocolate could be gone forever by 2050
Unless researchers can genetically modify the cacao plant to survive in other climates, chocolate could be gone by 2050.
BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA — Scientists say chocolate is in danger of disappearing as early as 2050 due to global warming.
Researchers from the University of California are now working with the Mars company to save the cacao plant from disappearing, Business Insider reported.
Warmer temperatures and drier weather conditions will soon threaten the world's cacao plants.
Cacao can only grow within a narrow strip of rainforested land about 20 degrees north and south of the equator, where temperature, rain and humidity are relatively constant year round.
Over half of the world's chocolate currently comes from two west African countries: Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana.
Rising temperatures over the next few decades will make those regions unsuitable to grow cacao.
Berkeley scientists are now using a technology known as CRISPR to modify of cacao plant DNA in order to see if it can be made to survive in different climates.
Researchers hope to be able to develop cacao plants that don't wilt or rot at their current elevations under warmer conditions.
