Athletics Explainer - 2017 Summer Universiade
Athletics competition consists of track and field events. Field events consists of throwing and jumping, where athletes compete to achieve the greatest distance or height; in other words, they try to throw something long or heavy as far out as possible! Field events also include jumping events like pole vault, high/long jump, or the triple jump.
Track events are won by athletes who cover a specific distance with the fastest time. Races under 400 meters are considered to be sprints; during the 3000-meter steeplechase, athletes must clear 4 barriers and a man-made pond upon each leap; the half-marathon tests the athletes’ endurance, as they must run 21.098 km. Relay races are dependent on strong team dynamics.
