A 39-year-old shooting instructor in Arizona was airlifted to a hospital Monday after he was accidentally shot in the head by a 9-year-old girl who he was teaching how to fire a submachine gun, authorities said on Tuesday. He later died of his injuries.
The accident happened around 10 a.m. at an outdoor shooting range located in Dolan Springs when the 9-year-old student was getting instructions on how to fire an Uzi from 39-year-old instructor Charles Vacca of Lake Havasu City.
“Vacca was standing next to the girl while he was instructing her how to use the weapon when the accident happened,” a Mohave County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said. “Further investigations determined that when the girl pulled the trigger on the automatic Uzi, the recoil sent the gun over her head, and the victim was shot.”
Vacca was airlifted to University Medical Center in Las Vegas where he died of his wounds at 8:56 p.m. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed.
Authorities have not released many details about the 9-year-old girl, who was not injured, but did say the child and her parents were passing through Dolan Springs as part of a vacation.
