Apple’s surprise bag sale in Japan attracted hundreds even in snowy weather yesterday. The surprise bags could contain iPad Air, iPhone 5, Macbook Air or Mac Pro along with other small gifts. Each bag was sold for $348.

Other stores also had New Year’s promotions that started on Thursday. Stationery store MUJI is selling surprise bags for $10 dollars each. The annual tradition of surprise bags, also known as fukubukuro in Japanese, started in 1907 when MATSUYA department store bagged small scraps of fabric and sold them during New Year holiday. Matsuzakaya department store followed suit and began a similar promotion in 1911. These types of promotions have become a part of Japanese shopping culture.

The fukubukuro bag custom has also spread to other places like Hong Kong.
