American tourist beaten to death by men for selfie with waitress
As Henderson tried to flee, a mob of 10-15 men chased after him, body-slammed him to the ground, and proceeded to punch and stomp him to death within 20-30 seconds.
ZAKYNTHOS, GREECE — A young American man was beaten to death in the street last Friday night, by a group of Serbian men who didn’t appreciate him taking a selfie with a Serbian waitress.
Bakari Henderson, 22, graduated from the University of Arizona earlier this year. To begin his professional career, he travelled to the Greek Islands to work on a photoshoot for a clothing line he was trying to launch. On July 7, Henderson was out at a bar in Zakynthos with some friends, when he asked a Serbian waitress to take a selfie with him. The bar happened to be putting on a Serbian-themed night, and a group of Serbian men watching took exception to Henderson’s request.
A fight broke out when one of the men struck Henderson, who in turn reportedly smashed a beer bottle over their table. As Henderson tried to flee, a mob of men chased after him, body-slammed him to the ground, and proceeded to punch and stomp him to death.
Surveillance video uploaded to YouTube captures the 30-second attack. The men only halted their assault after a woman passerby intervened and told them to stop. As they walked away, Henderson lay bleeding on the street.
A Greek coroner examining his body declared Henderson died of severe blows to the head. According to The Washington Post, nine of the men involved in the beating, most of them Serbian, have been charged with intentional homicide.
