Flying taxi performs successful test flight at Helsinki Airport
The Volocopter was able to take off while being connected to the airport's air traffic control system.
HELSINKI — German aviation startup company Volocopter successfully performed a test flight at Helsinki Airport on August 29.
The company used the Volocopter 2X, its second-generation flying electric vehicle which has 18 propellers and takes off and lands vertically, to perform the test flight.
Volocopter's website says that the flying vehicle is powered by electric batteries and has a range of around 27 kilometers with speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour. It can carry up to two people.
The vehicle had to perform under different test scenarios which included ground tests, manned and unmanned flights, according to a press release by Volocopter.
The air taxi was able to take off while being connected to the airport's air traffic control system and exchange data in real time.
The vehicle will have another test flight in Germany on September 14.
According to Volocopter's website, the company is planning to build Volo-Ports, or air terminal stations, where passengers can catch a ride on one of its flying vehicles.
The company plans to present its Volo-Port structure in Singapore later this year.
