JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA — Oh, the irony. Florida mom Jamie Gilt, 31, is a vocal pro-gun activist with a Facebook page titled "Jamie Gilt for Gun Sense." If only she had some.
On her Facebook page, Gilt posts pictures of her "new toys" (guns, of course) and also inspirational messages such as, "My right to protect my child with my gun trumps your fear of my gun!" Preach it, sister!
Except it was her child who nearly killed her with that same gun on Tuesday. While driving a truck and trailer along Highway 20 to pick up a horse from a nearby friend, Gilt's 4-year-old son got his hands on a .45 caliber handgun that had evidently had been left somewhere in the back seat. The child fired the weapon, the bullet went through the driver's seat and through Jamie Gilt.
Deputies responding to a call that a truck and trailer were immobile on the freeway found the mother wounded. After being rushed to hospital, Gilt is in stable condition, according to reports. Her Facebook page has been deactivated.
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled on the Second Amendment, and like it or not, such rulings must be respected. The right to own a gun has been determined to be a constitutional right. But why are some so afraid of common sense ideas like trigger locks? The Washington Post reported late last year that toddlers accidentally shot people on a weekly basis in 2015: guns don't kill people, people who leave guns lying around for toddlers to play with do!
